Center for Naval Warfare Studies: The Director of Maritime History Department (MHD) and Executive Director of the NWC Museum currently fall under the Center for Naval Warfare Studies (CNWS). CNWS serves as the nexus for broad-based, advanced research on the naval contribution to a national strategy. The Center produces scholarship and original research and fosters critical and innovative thinking on current and evolving operational challenges of importance for the Navy and the nation. While the department is part of CNWS, support to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Center for Naval Warfare Studies and the Dean of International Programs is an integral aspect of role of the Director of the MHD and a core mission for the department. The Director ensures broad support from the MHD to all of NWC’s activities and departments.

Maritime History Department: The Maritime History Department manages and directs the Naval War College’s maritime history research and sea service heritage programs throughout the College. It serves as the central resource and contact point in matters relating to maritime history and has particular responsibility for implementing and coordinating the College's research and writing program in this area. The Department also provides the interface between NWC, the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and the NWC Museum. The position works closely with the Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History, who serves as the College’s senior academic expert in the field of maritime history.

The Director will be expected to support the Department’s history and research agenda as well as research into the NWC’s other maritime history needs as established by the Dean of CNWS, the Provost and the President of the NWC. The Director’s areas of responsibility include historical research in global and U.S. maritime history, NWC command and local naval history, occasional maritime history publications, occasional maritime history conferences, commemorative events, history fellowships and prizes, and oral history. Additionally, the Director will also serve as the Executive Director for the NWC Museum and will provide the interface between the NWC, NHHC and the NWC Museum. In this role, the new hire will be expected to provide advice and support to the Museum’s Managing Director, guide the establishment of museum policy, develop ongoing and special exhibits and coordinate with the College the use of the Museum in executing the College’s mission consistent with the NWC-NHHC MOU.

Qualifications: Qualified candidates must have a terminal degree from an accredited university in one or more of the following areas: history, international relations, strategic studies or a related filed. The position requires demonstrated experience working in maritime history programs that provide research, education, and information presentation.

A Ph.D. in history is greatly preferred. A background and demonstrated familiarity with museum operations, historical exhibit development, maritime historiography, historical research methods, and archiving are all highly desirable.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens and capable of obtaining a Department of Defense SECRET security clearance.
